I was recommended to you by Dr. Mona Lisa Schulz. I have memory problems from long term PTSD, several viruses and now Chronic Fatigue. I often forget people's names. The other day I forgot a good friend's name but could see her face in my mind. As I study the brain for a hobby, and was looking at a recent SPECT scan, I wondered, "What would happen if I moved her face to a different area of the brain?" I don't remember where I moved the face to but the name immediately came to me. Can you explore this idea? What area would have more reliable memory? Is anyone doing this kind of work?

Hello, David.

It certainly seems that, as with any new field, our understanding is rivalled by our misunderstanding!

A study by the UCSF Memory and Aging Center shows that a steady decline in mental sharpness sets in around age forty. After that we lose about 1% of our short term memory per year. Which doesn't sound like much, but it adds up to 10% per decade.

BUT... this decline isn't inevitable. A big part of the reason that we begin to "lose it" is that we're no longer engaging in the kinds of mental tasks that release the right brain chemicals to keep our minds plastic.

If anyone is interested, I'd refer them to this page from my site that dives in to some of detail you refer to.

http://mindsparkebrainfitnesspro.com/alzheimers-dementia-science-brain-fitness.htm

I'm in the brain fitness business and therefore I'd encourage people to read with appropriate skepticism. But the research and resources are out there for anyone to verify for themselves.

“How many people are going to get up and say, ‘I’m excited about doing my multiplication tables today’?” she said. “Not many.”

What if they were like this:
